Inspirational content, networking with JAVA rock stars and a fantastic atmosphere: that describes the 2017 edition of Devoxx.
This year again, ING participated in the Devoxx conference in Antwerp. Devoxx is the biggest Java Community conference in Europe, where thousands of developers and over a hundred speakers share their passion and knowledge about Architecture, Security, Methodology, Mobile, and numerous other trends with one another.
In the context of uniting two of the ING home markets (Unite) we joined forces with our Dutch colleagues to become one of this edition's platinum sponsors.
ING has, in the meantime, become a tech company where we aim to redefine banking “as we know it” in the future with a global IT platform
says Johan Willems, Head of ITS Strategy at ING Belgium.
To put this message more prominently in the spotlight within the JAVA community one of our engineers, Patrice Krakow, presented a keynote speech about “API versioning for Zero Downtime”..
Patrice is a lead architect for the API platform at ING and one of the top-class speakers during the first days of the conference. He gave his presentation in a conference hall filled to the rafters with developers and, at the end of the conference, earned a 40th place among the 100 highest-ranking keynotes!
The question about how to deal with continually changing APIs is a controversial topic within the community. One the one hand, API providers want to change their APIs whenever they have a brilliant idea but, on the other hand, API consumers expect the APIs they use to remain stable. With innovation embedded into our DNA, we at ING have only one ultimate goal for our own API platform: to guarantee zero down time!

Networking with Java rock stars
The conference is acclaimed internationally as the number one meeting place for learning, networking and sharing experience about Java and related technologies, software craftsmanship trends and more. Peter Jacobs (CIO ING Netherlands) and more than 40 other enthusiastic ING engineers attended the conference with a view to acquiring new knowledge from other inspirational speakers, such as Venkat Subramaniam (award-winning author, founder of Agile Developer and speaker at various international conferences).
Aside from the above, Devoxx is was the perfect event at which to introduce our new engineering culture. We did this with a fantastic stand in the exhibition hall where visitors were invited to join in intense discussions about working within an engineering culture at ING. Not only that, the stand drew a constant stream of visitors thanks to the cool VR games that allowed visitors to race against one another or experience a virtual landing on the moon, among others! (Did you know that the games in our ING Core Bank University were developed by us?)
