ING IT Class 2016 - Hiring the best IT talents
Think Forward. Start innovation. Digital transformations. The best client solutions. Fintechs. The demand for technical IT engineers is increasing, at the same time that highly educated IT specialists can pick and choose almost any job they want. ING also needs top IT talents! The IT Class has proven extremely successful in this. “We need the best IT talents from the market”, says ING WBS CIO Peter van Buuren at the IT Class selection day opening note at the ING Customer Experience Center in Amsterdam.
On top of the labour market
“Recently graduated, with master degree in Computer Engineering or related areas. That is what we are looking for“, says IT manager Peter Penning, founder of the IT Class together with IT manager Peter Noordzij. “This group fits excellently in the ING Think Forward strategy,” Penning continues. “They are IT specialists with knowledge on the newest technologies. ING benefits from this immediately. With the best tools we also facilitate that these talents remain up-to-date”. ING is also wholeheartedly supporting the participation of the engineers of the IT Class in events, not only as visitors but also to be on stage and talk about high performance computing, financial markets software and specific client portal solutions. This speaks to the current IT talents!
The IT Class
IT Class coordinator Ismenia Galvao explains the headlines of the traineeship:
“The class is characterised by a guided rotation process. Each engineer has a coach for the first year, and performs three distinct technical assignments in three different departments during this period. Besides the technical content, the personal skills are coached as well”. “I did the IT Class in 2011 and it was certainly the best way to move from academia to the IT industry”, Ismenia follows. The class becomes an institute at ING for talents. After a successful first year, the IT Class engineer becomes a permanent employee of ING. Then, “the ING sky is the limit”, like Peter van Buuren said. “To make a career you need proper coaching, empowerment, networking, good challenges, drive and talent. That is exactly what we bring in this class”, finalizes Ismenia.
The traineeship is now entering its 7th year in succession. It now covers several WBS areas such as Financial Markets, Lending, Channels, Payments, and Innovation. Group Services and BMG managers joined the initiative this year and are actively participating from the initial stages of the selection process.
“This Class is very exciting”, says Global IT recruiter Rob van Elburg. For the first time we used Codility as an online technical assessment tool. We want to make 25 hires. To reach this we need around 45 people on our selection days, i.e. at least 60 good test scores, together with a Master in IT. This means 140 candidates in process. So I had to reach at least 1500 Master IT graduates to inform about this Class directly. That is more than Holland has to offer, so I also searched in the EU. Woman in Tech Recruiter Ingrid de Jong supported as well. “We hope to make an extra 5 female hires” she says. “We will succeed”, Ingrid continues.
IT at ING is popular
We work together with the newest tools and methodologies, we offer a global career and we are famous for our innovations in, for example, high performance computing, datamining and our portals. We also offer technical coaches and varied assignments in the first year. This is what talented IT specialists are looking for. To learn a lot, in a high-end IT organisation, with colleagues and managers who are technically competent. Next year a new challenge Rob & Ingrid are saying. Then we’ll go for 35 IT graduates hires. Peter Penning smiles: “That can be done. Department GS and BMG are on board as well. So the program is growing”. This year we see that the combination ING-Amsterdam-Master IT – EU- Codility –Selection Day class give us great opportunities. So for sure we are going to grow next year.
IT Class info and selection days
Ultimately 25 candidates will be selected for IT Class 2016. This year the selection days take place on May 26th and June 2nd. IT Class coordinator Ismenia Galvao has ensured that the selection days are very interesting and motivating. The activities included demos by the engineers of the current IT Class and testimonials by former members (Ioanna Tziouvara, Marcus Vasco, Adelina Ionescu and Thomas Katsikarelis). On the first selection day, Peter van Buuren shared inspirational words about how to make a good career. Johan Ensing, Global Murex manager also participated and shared his motivation on the traineeship as a senior coach of the IT Class. Every candidate also had at least two conversations with potential coaches. Ambition, motivation, skills and other relevant topics were discussed. The true passion for IT, the perception of technology, the commitment to ING, grades, and code checks were all subjects that came to discussion during the intensive meetings. Afterwards, only if both coaches agreed on the quality of the candidate a job offer is made. The next class starts on September 1st.
We made a total of 14 offers this 1st selection day Rob van Elburg says. We definitely going to make 25 hires for the 2016 IT Class.
