ING WB Legal, Amsterdam supports business units both locally and abroad and in addition to transaction support, promotes (product) innovation, implementation of relevant laws and regulations, international co-operation and harmonization of processes and products.

The team

Our department counts around 50 lawyers. The team Sectors and Lending consists of 15 lawyers with different backgrounds. We support our internal clients in product development, transactions and incidents. Our team is responsible for drafting and reviewing ING’s loan documentation and we contribute to various innovation initiatives such as automation and AI tools integration. We participate in legal committees of (international) banking associations. We also implement new laws and regulations. We closely work together with a second legal transaction team which deals with a variety of structured finance transactions.

As a strategic partner in business, we are always talking to our local and international commercial colleagues. We closely work together, verify our analyses and share knowledge with each other in a formal and informal manner. By doing this we maximally benefit from the gained knowledge and experience, lessons learned and best practices. We use our expertise and knowledge about new developments to the greatest extent possible. We do this via quarterly updates, one-on-one discussions, lunch & learn sessions etc.

We find it important that our business is aware of the legal ins and outs of the products they work with. We also provide a variety of training sessions f.i. via e-learning, webcasts and (virtual) class room training. That is why we stress the importance of presentation skills.

We work in accordance with ING values and each lawyer in our department has taken the Dutch banker’s oath (see ING Values).

Roles and responsibilities

What are your tasks and responsibilities?

  • drafting, reviewing and negotiation of complex (international) finance contracts and security documentation;

  • advising internal clients over financing structures and legal issues and questions relating thereto;

  • working in deal teams comprising colleagues from different functions within the bank;

  • working with different stakeholders within the bank in relation to the development of new or changes to existing products;

  • creating and maintaining standard documentation;

  • develop and support legal and front office innovation initiatives;

  • key role in developing and maintaining (internal) client relationships and those with internal and external specialists; and

  • contributing to pool of specialist of knowledge and providing specialist training for internal clients.

You have:

  • a university degree in Dutch law or equivalent foreign degree;

  • a minimum of 6 years’ experience as in-house counsel or lawyer in a law firm;

  • proven knowledge of and affinity with financial services, in particular in the field of corporate and structured finance; experience with LMA documentation is a must;

  • excellent communication skills in English (written and spoken). Dutch language skills preferred;

  • experience with or a profound interest in applying technology to the delivery of legal serices; and

  • ability to focus on the key risks of a transaction.
