Arturo Manzaneda Tudela

ING’s commitment to investing in people amazed me

After finishing his master in Telecommunication Engineering and Electronic Engineering in Barcelona, Arturo Manzaneda decided to follow his girlfriend who had moved to Amsterdam for her studies. When he came across one of ING’s recruiters at a job fair, their presentation about ING and call for talented young people in IT tempted him. “I wasn’t aware until then that I could work in technology at a bank. But the recruiter’s presentation was so appealing that I applied right away. When I met my fellow candidates and saw in what kind of environment I would probably be working, I became even more enthusiastic.

Big challenge

We started IT Class with a very international group, with young graduates from all over the world. Everybody started working in their first rotation right away, although we occasionally attended courses together. My first rotation was at the Generic Real-Time Engine department, which is responsible for maintaining and developing the local order manager and the real-time payment engine. My role was to develop the front end of a new web application used for alerting.

For my second rotation, I chose to work within the team that develops and manages the client portal for wholesale banking. My main role was to implement an analytics tool, similar to Google Analytics. The outcome of my assignment was very positive; the tool is now officially used by the team. My manager was quite pleased with what I achieved in only four months, and I guess much of that is thanks to my student job in Barcelona, where I was a party promoter. My ability to talk to all kinds of different people was a great help during my second rotation.

A highly innovative environment

For my third rotation I worked on Dovetail, a third-party payment engine, and in a team with the other IT Class members in the ING Labs. It was great fun to work in such a highly innovative environment! But all good things must come to an end, and so I started in my first permanent position at the Payment Service Directive 2 (PSD2), helping them develop APIs. After 8 months my second permanent role came up: I was asked to join the Blockchain Team, focussing on Distributed Ledger Technology, a method of organizing transaction records in a shared, distributed database. In this team I have been working with very innovative people, and I have learned a lot.

New doors opened

Recently I moved to the Trade Finance Department. As an IT Chapter Lead I focus on exposing APIs around trading assets, to internal and external audiences. Invoicing for example, that allows banking customers to send their invoices, automated bank guarantees or letters of credits. I’m now introducing Kotlin to my chapter: I think it’s a more effective language than Java. This is my first managing role, and I really like it, it offers me a great opportunity to further develop my people management skills. Listening and helping other people to be successful, spreading knowledge and make it happen. All in all, the IT Class opened so many doors and new opportunities, it felt like a third master's degree to me. And the best part of all, is that after these years in ING I am still finding new challenges and new opportunities.”
