The Energy Sector team within ING Wholesale Banking is globally responsible for coverage and developing business with wholesale (institutional) clients in the sector through its teams based in APAC, EMEA, and the Americas. The Energy Sector comprises conventional and renewable power generation, transport and storage and covers activities across the oil & gas value chain. Besides traditional sources of energy (electrons and molecules), the ambition is to be at the forefront of emerging zero-carbon energy systems like green molecules, carbon capture utilization and storage (CCUS) and technologies that provide a solution to the intermittent nature of power generated from solar and wind. This team provides coverage and delivery of financial solutions by way of financing and advisory products to leading players in the energy sector globally.

We are seeking a senior Energy banker at (senior) Director / Managing Director level in Tokyo who would enjoy working in an established and successful global team and drive business growth. This is a client facing role with responsibility for the Energy sector business in Japan, originating inbound and outbound opportunities.

Given the seniority of the role, the individual is expected to have senior / C-suite level relationships and the capability and experience to lead multi-product and x-border deal teams. You will drive the strategy for building and growing the business with Energy clients in Japan.

You are a self-starter and will work closely with colleagues in Japan, across APAC and globally. The role requires an experienced individual who can work with little or no supervision.

Responsibilities

  • The successful candidate is expected to drive origination of new business (inbound and outbound) with Japanese clients, manage client relationships and oversee deal execution.

  • Identification and origination of cross-selling opportunities across the full range of the Bank’s offering of lending, financial markets, transaction banking and advisory products.

  • The work envisaged encompasses formulating client/sector strategy, leading origination efforts, leading deal structuring, taking a leadership role and guiding deal team members, leading internal approval processes, and coordinating with relevant product teams to deliver multi-product solutions to clients to achieve cross-buy and return objectives.

  • Maintain strong knowledge of industry trends, banking products, relevant regulations in order to understand the business of the Bank's clients and energy transition developments.

  • Identification, development, and maintenance of close relationships with clients as primary contact. Developing presentation material and pitches to clients leading to new mandates. 

  • Helping achieve team KPIs including economic income, ESG, cross-buy (in financial markets, transaction services and capital markets & advisory) and return targets and other financial/non-financial KPIs.

  • Coaching and guiding junior team members.

  • Identifying and monitoring developments and opportunities within the Energy sector. Continuously build knowledge on the sector, competitors, products, and macroeconomic trends/ issues and contribute to ING strategic initiatives.

Person Specifications

  • Masters degree in Economics / Mathematics / Engineering / Finance / Accounting.

  • Strong Japanese and English language skills.

  • C-suite client contacts and professional relationships in the Energy sector and in Japan.

  • Experience in working with clients in the Energy sector in Japan or globally, with a strong track record in business origination and client delivery.

  • Strong commercial acumen, leadership, communication, and presentation skills with proven experience in structuring, credit and deal execution.

  • Exposure to and experience in cross-selling wholesale banking products across lending, sustainable finance, financial markets, DCM, M&A/Debt advisory and transaction services.

  • Minimum of 15 years of relevant project finance / investment banking / energy industry experience.

  • A proven team player with good interpersonal and communication skills.

  • Self-starter able to work independently and to multi-task. Confident to lead senior dialogues with clients, internal stakeholders and to speak in public / at conferences.

  • Motivated, a commitment to excellence and having a “can do” attitude.
