Finance traineeship

The fast track to your future as a Chief Financial Officer

The Finance traineeship at ING prepares you for a future role as a Chief Financial Officer (CFO). On this track within the ING International Talent Programme you’ll develop your financial knowledge and agility, both in analysing data from the past and forecasting figures for the future. You’ll learn to work with complex computational models and to prepare reports for the management team. You’ll be in regular contact with members of ING’s senior management team right from the start, such as during lunches with one of the CFOs.

Make a real difference as a trainee

As a trainee, you’ll discover first-hand what it’s like to work in a complex, international environment. We expect a lot of you. A master’s degree is a key requirement for a Finance traineeship, preferably in accountancy & control, (business) economics, finance, business administration or business studies. We expect you to take the initiative to shape your own career; to be eager to learn and to take an entrepreneurial approach. We expect you to develop, and share, your own vision. Above all we expect you to deliver results – all right from day one of your traineeship. As a trainee within ING, you can – and should – make a real difference.

Your first rotation: the fundamentals of finance

You choose your first rotation within the Finance traineeship together with  your talent manager. We will of course take into account your personal preferences, your learning objectives and the current opportunities within the company. Your first rotation will introduce you to the core business of finance within Financial Accounting and Management Accounting. You’ll learn the fundamentals of finance and lay the first cornerstone for your career at ING. No matter which project you begin with, you learn a lot and rapidly and you’re given plenty of responsibility right from day one.

Your second rotation: expanding your financial knowledge

It’s up to you to arrange your second project. Now it’s a matter of making use of your network and your own initiative. Many of our trainees opt to work on an international project at this stage.

In your second rotation you’ll expand your knowledge of Finance. We encourage you to look into the other areas within Finance in order to get a broader understanding of the finance discipline. For example, you could demonstrate how your financial knowledge contributes to improving our services.

A third rotation of 3 to 6 months abroad

During your third rotation, you have the opportunity to join the daily life of a Wholesale Banking team abroad.  Many of our trainees choose to go to Singapore, London, New York or Istanbul, where you can put the knowledge you gained during your first rotation at ING’s headquarters to good use.

Your first ‘real’ job

In your first ‘real’ job, which lasts for two years, you’ll enhance your knowledge and hone your skills. You can choose to work within one of ING’s specific business lines, such as in the Management Accounting or Financial Accounting departments, or perhaps you prefer to work at corporate level in Capital Management, Regulatory Reporting, Policies & Procedures or Finance Bank Treasury.

Shape your own career

These roles are just a handful of examples to illustrate possible career paths within ING. You’re in charge of shaping your own career. Finance trainees have the unique opportunity to be mentored by one of our CFOs. Throughout the year, we also organise several meetings for trainees with CFOs and these are the ideal opportunity to exchange ideas and share knowledge.

As you can see, we offer you the chances, the tools and the facilities, but it’s up to you to use them effectively in order to make your traineeship a success.

General and specialised training courses

All trainees at ING participate in our global learning events. You learn about every aspect of core banking, such as the role of a bank, the bank balance sheet, bank funding, IT processes and risk management. Needless to say, these events also help you to develop your soft skills such as business partnering, stakeholder management and presentation techniques. Furthermore, we offer a broad spectrum of training opportunities that are aligned with your specific development needs.

Finance trainees follow a specific training programme for the Finance discipline including CFA I. You can supplement this with further study, such as for CIMA or RC.
