I feel privileged to be their trusted advisor.

What is your main role as a private banker?

You accompany your client during important moments in their lives. For example, you give advice on investments, loans or inheritance planning. It gives me tremendous satisfaction to know that our advice means something in their lives and that our proposals have led to results.

For that, you need to know your client inside out. Not just in terms of numbers, but also their personal story and evolution, where they are and where they want to go and what they find important in life or what their family situation is. This personal approach is what makes ING unique.

Is it a solitary job?

Absolutely not. ING has a broad expertise that you can count on. We cover all facets of banking under one roof. You can really feel that we all work towards the same purpose. That purpose is not just about numbers and targets, it’s about having an impact on your clients and their wealth.

That collaboration fits completely with ING's culture. Everyone is approachable and happy to share experiences with you. We favour each other's successes and help each other out. It all starts with a good atmosphere and cooperation, but it is also key to have fun together.

How important are numbers in your job?

Everything starts with the figures, of course. For each consultation, you analyse the evolution of their assets and the results of their business. A private banker has often already spent some time at the bank. In my ten years at ING, I did the reception, but also loans, investments and personal banking.

But besides the numbers and the technical side of private banking, your soft skills are crucial, being able to assess people, interpret what they say but also what they don't say. You get a huge amount of information from non-verbal communication.

Is there a learning culture?

Constant learning is key! ING attaches great importance to this. You are given the opportunity to take training courses, to polish up and deepen your technical knowledge. Another great thing about ING is that you can make mistakes here, learn from them and grow.

Something that’s also very enriching for me personally, are the meetings with the clients. You discover the story behind their success. This fascinates and inspires me. We also meet at conferences and informal events. That way, you also get to know the client in a different way.

What makes you proud to work in private banking at ING?

ING is quite unique thanks to all the expertise that we have in private and business banking. And the fact that we are not tied to our own investment solutions. We are free to choose the best in the market. Whatever is in the best interest of our clients. That’s how we create impact and will continue to grow.
