As our new Internal/External Communications & Engagement lead, you’ll be responsible for the internal/external communications & engagement strategy and execution, in cooperation with ING Group’s internal/external communications team. As a communications expert, you’ll be driving internal engagement, in-and external communication concerning strategic organisational issues and strengthen our reputation. You’ll be the sparring partner and first point of contact for one or more of ING Netherlands’ board members/business units.

The team

You’ll be managing the Internal/External Communications & Engagement team, which is part of the Brand Experience, Marketing & Communications Centre of Expertise (BMC CoE). The team that is in development currently consists of 10 professionals. The BMC CoE is home to communications experts in the fields of branding, advertising, media, sponsoring, events, internal and external communications, media relations and issue management. You’ll report to the head of Brand Experience, Marketing and Communications in the Netherlands.

Role and responsibilities.

  • You’ll shape the internal/external communications & engagement strategy, setting the right objectives with a clear contribution to the corporate strategy focused on outcome and driving programs & activities. As a manager, you’ll play a key part in the team’s further development. Naturally, this will also involve correct alignment with the various other teams that are part of the BMC CoE.
  • You’ll act as an advisor to ING Netherlands’ board members/business units and/or strategic organisational issues, and you’ll safeguard implementation of your advice by ensuring a streamlined organisation and execution.
  • The activities the team focuses on include corporate/external communications, all-staff and leadership communications, advice on the use of internal and external channels, engagement in internal sponsorship activation and communications advice including support for the business lines.
  • You’ll work in close alignment with ING Group’s internal/external communications team on topics that go beyond the scope of ING Netherlands alone and will become part of a global network of more than 500 brand, marketing and communications professionals.


Your profile 

You’re an experienced, decisive, energetic and connecting leader with a clear internal/external communications vision. You love innovation, and you’re solution-driven and creative with a flexible mindset. Teamwork comes naturally to you. You’ve got a proven track record of and affinity with advising boards and senior management in a business environment.

You also have the following:

  • A university or higher professional (HBO) degree, preferably in communication sciences, corporate communications, branding and/or marketing (with a focus on the corporate/external side).
  • Passion for external/internal communications and engagement.
  • At least 5-10 years’ experience in a leadership role in complex environments.
  • Extensive proven track record in corporate internal and external communications, change-related communications in major national/international organisations with a wide range of stakeholders.
  • Extensive track record of giving strategic advice (at board level).
  • Extensive track record of stakeholder management.
  • Innate drive to look at the bigger picture so as to create optimum connections where needed.
  • Eagerness to learn in an organisation that is itself continually learning.
  • Creativity and innovative ideas, and you’re always up to speed on new developments in the field.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Empathy with the company.
  • Excellent written and oral skills in Dutch and English.
