The team

Our Area is SRE and Engineering Enablement, consisting of 4 chapters. You will join a small team of Solution Architects which serve the whole Tech DBNL organization. You will be working with and influencing people on many levels in the organization, from Engineers to Senior Management, on SRE best practices, Solution Architecture Governance, reducing Risk, and Observability best practices.

Roles and responsibilities

As a Solution Architect, you engage with ING’s Public and Private Cloud providers to understand the services they offer, and how those services can support the solutions being developed by the DevOps teams of the different Tribes within The Netherlands. You bring knowledge and experience in the field of Solution Architecture, Solution Design, Risk and Security, Infrastructure Services, and Private/Public Cloud Solutions, and use this knowledge to guide DevOps teams to develop and deploy their applications in a Reliable way.

On one hand, you talk with DevOps teams to help them create their designs, implement these designs, and gather their new requirements for the services they consume. On the other hand, you are in contact with the infrastructure providers and risk department to understand the services they deliver and what standards need to be followed. You determine what is the impact of platform changes on the Tech landscape and translate these requirements for our stakeholders. Because of the one-to-many relationship we have with our Tech community, you think about the most efficient way to adopt solutions by creating generic Blueprints, Solution Designs, and Policies, compliant with the rules and standards of ING. Be ready to make your hands “dirty”, testing new solutions via Proof of Concepts or Pilots, and test out various services to ensure they are fit for use. You will consolidate requests and impact from changes on the platform side from within the Tech community, lead technology communities, act as a sparing partner to (senior) management, and influence the organization to be more resilient, reliable, and available.

These are the top five responsibilities of our team:

  • Understand the Public and Private Cloud Service offering within ING and develop and update generic Infrastructure Blueprints and Solutions for DevOps teams to adopt.
  • Lead technology communities around major technologies in use, gather feedback for these services, and engage with service providers to prioritize our feature requirements on their backlog.
  • Influence DevOps engineers, and (senior) Managers to prioritize SRE topics within their backlog planning.
  • Managing various projects. These can range from adopting a specific tool to manage Observability, life-cycle management, to migrations of applications between Clouds, or Services.
  • Stay ahead of the curve, understanding what is happening outside of the organization in terms of regulatory requirements so we can be better prepared to adapt and minimize our Risk, as well as new technologies and solutions to improve our Applications and Services which we offer to our customers.

How to succeed

  • A bachelor’s degree in Software Development, Computer Engineering, or equivalent track.
  • 5+ years of hands-on experience with IT infrastructure services like Kubernetes, Oracle, Linux and Windows Servers, and Storage.
  • Knowledge of Enterprise Architecture, Networking and Connectivity, Cloud Computing, Risk, and Cyber Security.
  • You have excellent written and verbal communication skills in English (and preferable Dutch) in combination with a constructive and solution-oriented mindset.
  • Ability to work independently and autonomously, while still being part of a self-steering team
  • Have a proactive attitude. You do not wait until somethings happen but are in front of the pack.
  • Be able to act in a strong coaching and advisory manner by asking and challenging the right questions, looking at a bigger picture, and therefore sometimes going against individual interests.
  • You are stress resistant, assertive, and determined to turn resistance into solutions and support.
